Managing and optimising the entirety of your space can be challenging. Whether it is a shop, a manufacturing facility or a warehouse, extra floor space comes at a cost. And before you know it, you’ll be looking for a bigger, and more expensive, location. However, did you ever stop and think about your vertical space?

One aspect that businesses often overlook is their floor to ceiling space. Floor space fills up quickly, so why not replicate this floor space above you. And the perfect way to achieve that is by installing a mezzanine floor. Mezzanine flooring offers a semi-permanent and durable solution to vertical space management.

Within this article, we will cover everything relating to mezzanine flooring. From the benefits to the applications to the components; read our 2025 guide to mezzanine floors to find out more.

What is a Mezzanine Floor?

The first aspect to understand is what a mezzanine floor is and what is its purpose. By definition, a mezzanine floor is an intermediate floor constructed between the main floors of a building. It is typically a free standing structure.

The purpose of a mezzanine is to create extra space for storage, offices and shop floor space. Mezzanine floors have become a staple within modern architecture, being commonly found in industrial environments, shopping centres, gyms, airports, offices and more.

What are the Benefits of Mezzanine Floors?

With property at a premium, mezzanine floors offer numerous benefits for the business, the employees and the consumer.

Space

The main selling point of mezzanines is the extra space that it creates. By installing an intermediate floor, you can benefit from a larger floorplan that can be utilised for a number of purposes. Whether you wish to use this secondary floor for storage, office space, extra seating or to expand your shop floor, mezzanines can be used in a number of applications to improve spatial management.

Value

As you continue to expand, you may begin to look at other premises, even if you have installed a mezzanine floor. Having this mezzanine increases the value of your property due to having a large floor plan. Should you choose to sell, your mezzanine floor often covers the cost of its installation due to its added property value.

Organisation

Whatever the purpose of your mezzanine, the extra space can help to improve organisation within your business. Whether you need extra cages to store equipment when not in use or you are looking to create a separate meeting space to discuss project plans, mezzanines hold the answer.

Adaptable and Scalable

Due to their semi-permanent structure, mezzanines are fully adaptable and scalable to your requirements. Looking to expand or move your floor? No problem. We offer a non-disruptive process that ensures you can go about your regular business whilst we relocate your mezzanine floor.

Mezzanine Floor Applications

The beauty of mezzanine floors is that they are suited to a number of different applications, all with the benefit of creating that extra space. Here at MPC Systems, we have completed projects across the country for businesses large and small. From small-scale local offices to 750,000ft2 fulfilment centres, the limits of mezzanines boast no bounds.

Commercial

Mezzanine flooring is the perfect solution to your spatial issues in your commercial property. Whether your business is for hospitality, a manufacturing facility or a retail space, if you have the space, we can help utilise it.

Office

For open plan offices, mezzanines can help to improve working efficiency, create designated meeting rooms or even chill-out zones to help you and your employees unwind. We like to partner our office mezzanines with bespoke office partitioning, ensuring you have the workplace that you require to help grow your business.

Warehouse

Create extra storage space and better stock management with our mezzanine flooring. With excellent strength, durability and functionality, warehouse mezzanine floors can help to improve your business operations and organisation.

Retail

Investing in mezzanine flooring for your retail store can not only maximise space, but also increase your product placement and storage. Whether you need that extra floor space for higher footfall or to separate spare stock, retail mezzanines help your business operations run smoothly.

Mezzanine Floor Components and Accessories

The components and accessories of a mezzanine floor can vary from project to project, depending on requirements.

Typically, a mezzanine floor is made up of 5 key components:

  • Base Plates – These are the foundation to the mezzanine, the size and thickness being determined by the load requirements.
  • Support Columns – These rise from the floor and support the structure to evenly distribute the load capacity.
  • Primary Beams – These main beams run across the support columns and act as the primary support for the decking.
  • Secondary Beams – These beams span between the primary beams and act as a fixing point for the decking.
  • Decking – The decking is the floor of the mezzanine itself. This is fitted on top of the beams and allows for use.

Mezzanine Floor Regulations

As mezzanines are semi-permanent, free-standing and they do not affect the structure of the building, they don’t usually require planning permission, however they do need Building Regulation approval. Our team at MPC Systems will look after this for you.

There are also other rules and regulations that must be followed, such as fire safety, hand rails and accessibility. For more information on the regulations, give our team a call.

Mezzanine Floor Costs

The cost of a mezzanine floor installation varies from project to project. It will depend on factors such as your load requirements and square footage. On average, a commercial 100m2 storage mezzanine floor is approximately £10,000 plus accessories

Mezzanine Floor Weight Limitations

At MPC Systems, we offer a range of load bearings on our mezzanine floors. Our strongest mezzanines can hold up to 4000kg per square metre, making it the perfect choice for industrial environments, where heavy machinery is in use.

You must consider that the higher the weight limitation, the higher the cost. If you are looking for a mezzanine to expand your shop floor, you may not necessarily need a very high load capacity.
